Virginia licensure & eligibility
Virginia requires that both the clinician and the patient be physically located in the Commonwealth at the time of the telehealth visit. Bonsai Health confirms your location during enrollment and again at the start of each appointment. If you spend time out of state, let us know—we can coordinate brief medication bridges or adjust your visit schedule so you remain compliant.
When you submit the new patient enrollment form, include a government-issued ID and any documentation that shows your Virginia address. This keeps onboarding efficient and prevents delays when we reach the controlled-substance consent portion of intake.
Visit flow from intake to follow-up
- Initial consult. A focused 20–30 minute telehealth visit to confirm fit, review your top concerns, and determine whether Bonsai Health’s membership model aligns with your goals.
- Comprehensive intake. Once you join, we schedule a longer assessment that covers past diagnoses, current symptoms, medication history, and executive-function challenges that impact daily life.
- Membership visits. Depending on your plan, you’ll meet quarterly, monthly, or as often as needed. Each visit includes shared screen reviews of labs, to-do lists, and tools that make Virginia’s refill monitoring straightforward.
If you are unsure which membership tier offers the right cadence, review the comparison table on our services page or reach out via the contact form for personalized guidance.
Medication management and monitoring
Bonsai Health follows Virginia’s Prescription Monitoring Program requirements, which means stimulant prescriptions are tracked, refills are coordinated proactively, and we document objective and subjective markers of progress each time we meet. In many cases we combine ADHD-specific rating scales with health maintenance tasks (such as blood pressure checks) so you receive whole-person care.
For patients exploring alternatives to stimulants, we offer detailed counseling on non-stimulant medications, lifestyle interventions, and referrals to therapy partners across the state. You can preview our approach in the non-stimulant education article.
Making the most of your telehealth membership
- Use secure messaging. Send updates between visits so small issues are addressed quickly.
- Protect visit time. Set up in a quiet space with reliable internet and headphones when possible.
- Leverage executive function tools. Our executive function toolkit outlines systems you can start before your next follow-up.
Telehealth success also means inviting accountability partners when appropriate. If you’d like a spouse or roommate to join part of a visit, simply mention it in your secure message before the appointment.
